What can vou do to help the Marching Band?
There are several things that you can do to help the band do it's best all season long. Most importantlv see to it
that vour child is at every practice on time. Good attendance is what makes a GREAT BAND!
Attend as many of the contests and football games as you can. If there is a good group of PRIDE OF SOUTH
fans making lots of noise when the band takes the field, it really pumps them up and they perform better. You are welcome to come at any time to watch rehearsal. It will give you a better idea of what it takes to put a
show on the field. If attendance to the contests is difficult for you, this is an opportunity for you to see the band
perform.
There are several "regular positions" available for interested parents.
Box parents Uniforms for the Band and Color Guard are kept in wooden boxes on wheels. These are taken to
each contest site, the kids dress there, and then their uniforms are returned to the boxes after the performance.
The boxes contain the uniforms, the shoes, and the hats, all numbered and organized for each child. Two
parents are needed for each box...we have 8 boxes. At the contest site, the box parents make sure each child
finds his or her uniform, helps them get ready, and return the uniform to its proper hanger. This is a great
opportunity to interact with the kids and encourage them personally.
Pit Crew These are parents who go along with the "pit" percussion to the sidelines and unload and load the
instruments for the kids at performance time. You have to be strong and quick...there is a time limit for setting
up. The Pit Crew watches the performance from the sidelines...a pretty good place to be.
Laundry
Washable uniform components are laundered when necessary. When the trucks are unloaded and
boxes are taken in to the school, Guard uniforms and band pants are put into plastic bags. If you can take a bag
home and wash them it would be a great help to the box parents.
Tuesday
Evening Shoe and Hat Brigade - Each Tuesday evening, everyone is invited to the shoe cleaning
parfy! Each hat and every pair of shoes is cleaned. We have about 90 pairs of shoes and hats to clean. . .help is
needed!
Color Guard Flag Assembly During the summer, (at atime to be announced at a later date) parents work on
sewing, trimming, repairing, and assembling the flags used for the performances. This is a great time to get to
know other parents. There is usually plenty to do and the socializing makes the work lots of fun.
Calling Committee
We always need help contacting band parents by phone conceming fundraisers or to ask
for help. Parents also provide snacks for the kids on contest days when there is a distance to travel. Calls are
made to arrange for these snacks. Several volunteers who are willing to make these calls would be very helpful.
Spirit Boosters
We need a group of parents willing to decorate the band hallway, the buses, and the car
caravan on contest day. Also it is good for this group to travel ahead to the contest site to o'stake a claim" on a
section for our fans. Fans in "show t-shirts" make it easy for others to spot our section when they arrive at the
contest. Also, when the band takes the field, it's great for them to spot our group all assembled and cheering
them on. Without advance preparation, it is very difficult to have a place together.
Prop Builders
This year there will be some props may wili to be constructed. Imagination and a little skill with "Power Tools" will be all that is required to help in this effort.
Suggestions?
If there is anything else you would like to volunteer to do, just let us know. We always appreciate any help you
can offer. |
